John Mitchell Penny Moon Bracket Clock (Circa 1715)
A fine example of a penny moon bracket clock constructed from solid ebony mouldings and ebony veneer, the front door has arched corner frets and frets also to the canopy above, unusual 90° brass carrying handles and purpose turned finials and square pad feet the design of which is associated with John Mitchell.
A quality 8-day bell striking twin fuse movement has 5 finely turned pillars, verge escapement and good wheelwork. The backplate, ornately engraved depicting scrolling foliage a bowl of flowers and 2 squirrels.
An engraved arch surrounds the penny moon and date dial, above the 7in silver chapter ring with flower corner spandrels, a mock pendulum and a date aperture is also present below the hands on the finely matted centre of the dial, both finely engraved along with the strike/silent lever. Original pierced and faceted blued steel hands, with a signature at the bottom of the silvered chapter ring.
According to Britten's book of clockmaker's, John Mitchell was apprenticed to John Tarles 6th Sept 1705 and was free of the clock makers company on 1st June 1713. His address known to be St James St, London. Joseph Howell an engraver, is reported to be apprenticed to him in 1713 who was also free of the clock makers in 1721, it is therefore possible that the fine engraving on this item was possibly carried out by him.
