John Clayton Marple, Centre Seconds Long Case Clock (Circa 1760)

This solid Cuban mahogany clock by John Clayton is testament to excellent workmanship.

The hood has a swan necked top, with a bolection mold to the front and sides, carved rose paterae are to each side of the swan neck, with eglomise panels below and reeded columns with gilded, wooden doric type capitals are to each side of the glazed arched door.

A small ogee beading  surrounds the solid trunk door, which has a swept shaped top, all from fine figured mahogany.

At the junction of the trunk and base is an ogee and caveto molding and to the front corner's there is a fluted, angled stop chamfer mold.

The four-pillar movement is a virtually silent dead beat escapement, with full maintaining power and bell striking, the 13" brass dial has a raised silvered chapter ring and matted centre, original blued steel faceted hands with a full centre seconds hand, two ringed winding holes and a subsidiary calendar aperture, fine cherub head cast brass corner spandrels, and a rolling moon dial in the arch with the signature above.

The above longcase clock has been fully restored and carries a 12 month guarantee.
