Thomas Wainwright Longcase Clock, (Circa 1770), Movement (Circa 1890)

Thomas Wainwright has been around in his time and is listed as operating from 1876 to 1940 in Manchester, Ashbourne and finally Fenny Bentley.

This solid case is made from red walnut, with curved blind frets set in at the top of the canopy and a bolection molding above and to the sides, with a wooden finial to the centre. The front of the hood is a glazed arched door, with fluted pillars to each side, and shaped wings to the rear.

The main trunk which has a shaped top, trunk door, is also flanked by reeded ¼ pillars and houses the large pendulum and three weights with which to drive this exemplary movement, below this is a caveto molding between the trunk and base and stands on ogee corner feet.

The movement is equal to the manufacture of the case. It has a three train, dead-beat escapement with maintaining power, pull repeat facility, chiming on eight bells on the hour, ¼ hr's and ½ hr to the tunes of Whittington and Westminster with a singular bell for the hour.

The eight day four pillar movement has a 14"(356mm) dial with a raised chapter ring, raised cherub face brass spandrels to the corners and a full centre calendar.

The matted centre of the dial with the original hands has three ringed winding holes and to the arch a painted moon roller, with the Thomas Wainwright signature above.

Thomas Wainwright is renowned for making excellent and convincing copies, of 18th century style, clock movements and dials. His wheel cutting was quite a speciality, as can be seen at the rear of the rolling moon dial in the gallery pictures below along with his endless screw mechanism which enables a continuous 24/7 movement and is also a northern feature.

This Longcase clock has been fully restored and carries a 12 month Guarantee.
